Many parents and caregivers of someone on the Autism Spectrum know what it is like to be short on sleep! For some reason, sleep disturbance is a common problem with autism. Parents have told me so many stories about their childrens unusual sleep habits. Some children literally wander the house or their room all night long. Recently I talked to a lady who would find her son sleeping in the closet. She was concerned and tied the bifold closet doors closed to keep him out, but he lifted them off the tracks at the bottom and crawled under the doors to get in! My own grandson woke in the night one night and wedged himself underneath our bed. We were hysterical with panic the next morning until we found him sleeping peacefully under our bed! Obviously these boys both liked the small, confined spaces, and you are better off going with that than fighting against it! If they are not feeling safe and comfortable in their bed, they are probably not going to sleep t

Autism Acceptance
One of the greatest gifts, we as parents, can give our children on the Spectrum, is our acceptance of Autism as being part of their intrinsic selves.
When we can reach a heart-felt understanding that our children are unique individuals with their own temperament, personality, psychological/cognitive, physical/biological and emotional ‘make-up', whose immediate social, familial, physical etc., environment has a direct influence on their individuality and experience of life, we can in various moments, whilst excluding the input of others (outside influences), be re-centred in our own mini universe of the family unit and in our totally unique relationship to and with each other.
To refine my meaning here, imagine your immediate family unit as the ‘inner circle' of your existence on this planet. Within this primary circle, we work to understand each other; recognise and appreciate first-hand what makes each other ‘tick', how our unique relationship

Formal caregivers are typically paid providers but they may also be volunteers from a government or nonprofit organization. Where care is being provided in the home there is often a mix of formal and informal care provided. And the trend is towards using more formal care since, unlike the past, more informal caregivers are employed. They choose to remain employed but must juggle limited time between caregiving and maintaining a household and a job. These added responsibilities often make it necessary to hire non-medical home care aides to provide supervision and help when the primary caregiver cannot be present. Or as adult day services become more common, caregivers may pay for this form of formal caregiving to get rest or to allow for maintaining some employment. When care is no longer possible in the home, then formal caregivers come into play on a full-time basis. This may be in the form of a congregate living arrangement, assisted living, a continuing ca

During nursing, an area of redness, tenderness, and induration may develop in the breast. The organism most commonly found in these abscesses is Staphylococcus aureus. In the early stages, the infection can often be treated while nursing is continued from that breast by administering an antibiotic such as dicloxacillin or oxacillin, 250 mg four times daily for 7–10 days (see Puerperal Mastitis, Obstetrics). If the lesion progresses to form a localized mass with local and systemic signs of infection, surgical drainage is performed and nursing is discontinued.CausesWhen you are breastfeeding, the skin of the nipples can become grazed or cracked. This is usually a result of the babys gums pinching the nipple. Sometimes it happens because the nipple hasnt been far enough into the babys mouth, and has rubbed against the roof of the babys mouth. Many sore nipples are caused by the baby not being properly positioned or latched on. Breast infections are c

Diabetes is a very serious disease. Left unchecked, it can bring serious consequences including death. Fortunately, it is a disease that can be managed. Unfortunately most of the people who have diabetes do not know that they have it and hence do not treat it till it become very late. If you suspect you have diabetes, it is very important that you get prompt professional attention and to determine whether you suffer from this.
Diabetes mellitus arises when insufficient insulin is produced, or when the available insulin does not function correctly. Without insulin, the amount of glucose in the bloodstream is abnormally high, causing unquenchable thirst and frequent urination. The body's inability to store or use glucose causes hunger and weight loss.
The tissues and cells that make up the human body are living things, and require food to stay alive. The food cells eat is a type of sugar called glucose. Fixed in place as they are, the body's cells are com

There are many types of wheelchair vans on the market. One of the best bits of news is that there are also all kinds of used wheelchair vans too. This means that someone can easily find a van that has all of the fantastic options, but at a fraction of the cost.
This is due to several things. Firstly, a lot of different kinds of facilities will rely on their own private fleets of vans, but when these vehicles reach a certain amount of mileage they need to be traded in. This means that some remarkably high-quality used wheelchair vans become available soon after they have been on the market.
Of course, not everyone needs the larger used wheelchair vans that are relied on by nursing and rehabilitation facilities, but there are also many kinds of minivans available too. It helps to understand that there are constant innovations being introduced into these vehicles and that a lot of owners trade their relatively new vans in when some new technology has bee

What are accessible vans? They can be the large-scale vehicles that are used by a diversity of facilities in order to transport people who require wheelchairs or mobility scooters. They are also the "everyday" vehicles of millions of people as well. This is because accessible vans include the line of cars known as minivans.
How can a minivan qualify as one of the different accessible vans? Easily! Just consider that there are options for lowered floors, raised roofs, mobility ramps, chair lifts, removable seats, specialized straps and harnesses, extra storage, and more! All of these features make the minivan fully accessible and even capable of carrying a driver and a passenger who are both required to use a wheelchair or scooter.
How is that possible? Remember, we mentioned that the modern accessible vans can have automated mobility ramps, lowered floors, removable seats, and specialized harnesses? This means that the driver (in their wheelchair or s

<!-- @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --> Caring for an autistic child can be very challenging. No one can tell exactly how much sacrifice and patience it entails to care for an autistic child unless he/she has had experienced caring for one. Thus, parents who offer their unfaltering love and devotion to their autistic children are truly commendable. The anxiety and stress that accompanies bringing up such a special child can prove to be too much for the parents. And because autistic children are inherently impaired in terms of communication and socially interacting with other people, taking them along during trips or family outings can be quite a feat. The unpredictability of autistic children's behavior in reaction to external factors can be so threatening on the child and very heartbreaking on the parents, that it is like a ticking time bomb on the verge of exploding. It is very hard to tell when they would throw fits or ta
